90 min massage aftercare: what to do in the first 48 hours

Custom 90 min Massage (90 MINUTES, $150) in North-central San Tan Valley (Ironwood Drive area)
One thing I want you to do right after your 90-minute session is drink extra water, especially in San Tan Valley heat. People tell me they love the “just the right amount of pressure” and those smooth, relaxing strokes that let them “float away, ” and good hydration helps your body keep that loose, easy feeling instead of turning it into next-day stiffness.
0–6 hours, 6–24, and 24–48: a simple post-massage care timeline
After a Custom 90 min Massage, your nervous system tends to stay in that calm, heavy-limbed state for a while. One client described leaving happily “massage drunk” and even falling asleep during the session. That’s normal. Plan on taking it a little slower for the rest of the day.
Quick rule: I generally recommend you skip heavy lifting, intense workouts, and alcohol for 24 hours. Light walking is great.
Immediate (0–6 hours)
- Hydrate. A full bottle of water in the first hour is a good start, then keep sipping. In North-central San Tan Valley, dry heat sneaks up fast.
- Eat something simple with protein and a little salt if you tend to feel lightheaded after massage.
- Keep your day low-key. If you have a long drive back toward Queen Creek, Gilbert, Chandler, Florence, or Mesa, take a minute in your car before you pull out. Let your shoulders stay down instead of creeping up to your ears.
First 24 hours
- Skip strenuous exercise. I’m talking bootcamp, heavy weights, sprint intervals, long climbs at San Tan Mountain Regional Park. Save it for tomorrow.
- If you’re sore in one spot, use short sessions of ice (10 minutes) for a “hot” or irritated feeling, or gentle heat (10–15 minutes) for a tight, guarded feeling. You can alternate if that feels best.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. It tends to dehydrate you and can make soreness linger.
24–48 hours
- Bring back normal activity gradually. Most people do great with walking, easy cycling, or gentle mobility work.
- Pay attention to how your neck and shoulders feel at your desk or in the car. If you came in for shoulder and neck pain, this is where you protect your results by not sliding right back into that forward-head posture.
- If you booked a 90 minutes session because a 60 never feels like enough, I wrote out the differences in Custom 90 min vs 60-minute massage.
The first week: keep that “perfect pressure” feeling instead of re-tightening
A 90-minute session gives me time to do real work and still keep the session relaxing. People regularly mention how I spend the right amount of time on tight back and shoulder muscles, and how much better their neck feels even after one visit. The first week is where you make those changes last.
San Tan Valley reality: If you’re doing yard work, hiking, or dusty outdoor projects, give yourself a day or two before you go hard. Heat plus dehydration is a common reason soreness feels worse than it needs to.
Three easy stretches I like for home
- Doorway chest stretch: forearms on the door frame, step through slightly, breathe for 30 seconds. Great if your shoulders roll forward from commuting.
- Upper trap stretch: sit tall, gently tilt ear toward shoulder, keep the other shoulder heavy. Hold 20–30 seconds each side. No yanking.
- Child’s pose with side reach: reach hands forward, then walk hands to the right and left for 20 seconds each. This tends to feel amazing on the mid-back.
If you’re the type who holds tension up high, don’t wait until it’s screaming again. Many regulars come every other week, and some alternate a 90-minute custom massage with lymphatic drainage massage sessions. Lymphatic drainage and lymphatic drainage massage feel lighter and more rhythmic than deep work, and they pair nicely when your body needs calming, not “digging.”
Soreness relief, aromatherapy, and simple habits that protect your result
A little tenderness after deeper work can be normal, especially if we focused on chronic shoulder and neck tension. What I don’t want is for you to “power through” with a tough workout, dehydrate, and then decide massage doesn’t work for you.
Hydration after massage
Keep water where you’ll actually drink it. If you’re running kids around or heading back to work, set a reminder for a few steady sips every hour.
Heat, ice, and topical options
Use short sessions and reassess. If you like a topical analgesic at home, apply a thin layer and wash hands well. Keep it off sensitive skin.
Aromatherapy and downshifting
If you loved the calm vibe in the room, keep it going at home. A warm shower, dim lights, and gentle aromatherapy often help your body stay out of “go-mode.”
If you carry tension in your feet or you’re on them all day, extra time on your feet and lower legs can also be a nice add-in on another visit. I also talk more about stubborn upper-body tension in neck and shoulder knots with a Custom 90 min Massage.
When soreness is normal, and when I want you to reach out
Most people feel looser the same day, then notice mild soreness or “worked-on” tenderness the next day, especially after deeper focus work. That’s very different from sharp pain. If something feels off, I’d rather you message me and ask. People stick with me for years because I listen to what your body needs and I take your comfort seriously.
“Corinn is amazing my neck was hurting so bad and after just one session I feel so much better. I will be back!”
one of our regulars
Please reach out the same day if you notice sharp or shooting pain, new numbness or tingling, a fever, severe headache, or symptoms that get worse instead of better.
If you’re new and you found me by searching “massage near me” or “massage therapist near me, ” I want you to know you’re in the right place if you like a calm space, clear communication, and pressure that stays in the sweet spot. This is a massage spa vibe without the rushed, assembly-line feel.
And if you’re planning your next visit, you might like when to book a 90 minutes vs 60 minutes session. I also keep a broader overview in massage services in San Tan Valley.
Need to follow up or schedule your next session?
I’m easy to reach for quick questions, especially if you’re managing neck or shoulder pain and want to time your sessions around work, commutes, and family schedules.

One last note: If you’re alternating sessions, many people love pairing deep relaxation work with lymphatic drainage massage on a different week. Tell me what your body liked most today, and I’ll help you plan the next one.
